Life of an IAS officer during their training in LBSNAA
Those candidates who get recommended by the commission to join Lal Bahadur Shashtri National Academy of Administration located in Mussorie in Uttrakhand. It is a place where these officers meet their colleagues for the very first time. The duration of the entire training of the officers is about 2 years which is divided into the following:-
First is the foundation course
Those candidates who get recommended for the Grade A posts that include the IAS, IPS, and the IFS get an invitation to join a 3-month foundation course at LBSNAA. After this, the candidates of the 3 different services join in their specific academies for their training. Such that the IFS officials join the Foreign Services Institute located in New Delhi, the IRS officials join the National Academy of Direct Taxes located in Nagpur and the IAS officers have to remain back at LBSNAA.
1st Phase: Here the training program is for about 15 weeks at LBSNAA that includes the Bharat Darshan where the officers are provided with an all India tour program. Here the academic module involves Policymaking, land management, soft skills, project management, national security, the e-gov, and many more. They begin their day at about 6 AM in the morning with some exercise drills and after that, they attend the lectures which are followed by some cultural events in the evening.
Bharat Darshan: It is 1st phase of the training where the IAS officers are separated into tiny groups and are provided with a tour all over India. In this part of the training, the officers get a chance to experience the rich cultural diversity and also the heritage of India.
District Training: This training takes place at the district level for a time period of 1 year where the officers have to study the administrative set up in a specific district by being one of the parts of the administration.
2nd Phase: The 2nd phase begins with the sharing of the experiences that they have experienced in the 1st Phase of the training to their colleagues. Many discussion sessions are organized where the officers put forward their ideas on different developmental challenges and different issues and the methods to solve them. They also organize special sessions hosted by some distinguished subject matter experts for the officers that are a part of this learning exercise.
Assistant Secretaryship: After the completion of this induction training session, these IAS officers get the chance to join their respective delegation and can work under the guidance of the joint secretary in the ministries for some months.
IAS Officer Career Path
Here is the list and the details of the career path of an IAS officer according to their promotional avenues:
- The first phase as a trainee
- The next level of the 1st phase is the district level trainee according to allotted posts.
- The 2nd phase is where the trainee handles foreign attachment for at least 1 week.
- They have to play the role of an Assistant secretary for about 3 months at a very nominal post for a project administered by the central government.
- The post of a joint magistrate or an SDM or also as a sub-collector
- Or maybe designated for a post of honorable municipal commissioner
- The post of a secretariat at the state level of the joint secretary level
- A post of a DM or a collector post
- After the service of a considerable number of years, an IAS officer can try for the deputation post under the central government of India
- As a principal in the state or as a central secretariat
- As a state chief secretary
- As a cabinet secretary
The post of a cabinet secretary is thus said to be the highest position that an IAS officer can hold. According to the 7th Central Pay Commission, the initial salary of an IAS officer is about Rs. 56,100.
